Political Parties of Greece 2026

Greek politics are volatile in a way that would seem unfamiliar to the United States and even the United Kingdom. With parties gaining and receding according to a combination of policy and personalities, and parties splitting and merging at times, the established political landscape of Greece is slightly less about parties and more about long-standing political ideas and perhaps most of all, personalities and political families.

A list of the current and recent political parties of Greece

  1. New Democracy (ND) - Νέα Δημοκρατία: A center-right party (founded 1974) that has enjoyed an often wide-margin of popular support through the last couple of election cycles. Often associated with conservative and liberal ideologies, though the argument has been made that ND has become a "catch-all" for centrist Greeks. The current leader of the party is Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

  2. Greek Left Alliance (ELAS – Ελληνική Αριστερή Συμμαχία) A left-wing political party founded in May 2026 by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. ELAS wants to be the home to unite progressive, social-democratic, and left-wing voters for whom SYRIZA and PASOK have not met their expectations. Tsipras has announced the main goals as institutional reform, anti-corruption, social justice, and a form of economic growth for Greece that features inclusivity.
  3. Hope for Democracy (Ελπίδα για Δημοκρατία) Maria Karystianou's daughter was killed in the 2023 Tempi train disaster and that has served as a springboard for this political party launched by her in May 2026. With a central demand for accountability for the crash, the party also wants to be a force for anti-corruption and reform with the goal of governmental transparency, improvements in public safety, healthcare, education.
  4. PASOK - Panhellenic Socialist Movement (ΠΑΣΟΚ): Historically a center-left party, PASOK has long been a major political force in Greece. However, it has faced challenges in recent years and had spent years overshadowed by SYRIZA, but that has changed recently when it once again took on the role of official opposition to ruling party New Democracy. The current leader for PASOK is Nikos Androulakis.

  5. Movement for Democracy (Κίνημα Δημοκρατίας) A center-left to progressive political party founded in November 2024 by former SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis after his removal from the leadership of SYRIZA. The party advocates participatory democracy, transparency, institutional reform, digital modernization, and a pro-European orientation. In 2026 Kasselakis moved to rebrand the party as Democrats – Progressive Centre, although many Greeks still refer to it by its original name, Movement for Democracy. The party's creation contributed to the fragmentation of the Greek center-left following SYRIZA's decline.
  6. SYRIZA - Coalition of the Radical Left (ΣΥΡΙΖΑ): A left-wing political party (founded 2004) that played a significant role for recovery (as an official political party in 2012) during the economic collapse that began in 2009, and was the center of anti-austerity measures, official and unofficial, and the pursuit of social justice beliefs. The party was led by Alexis Tsipras, born 1974 in Athens, who was PM in Greece until 2019. SYRIZA was then led by Stefanos Kasselakis, a Greek businessman born 1988 in Marousi, Greece who became famous for international enterprise, mainly in the United States. During his leadership the party shrank in size and on September 8, 2024, the SYRIZA Central Committee voted "no confidence" and removed Kasselakis as party president.. In 2025 the party was led by Sokratis Famellos. SYRIZA ruled Greece from January 2015 until defeat in an electoral snap election in September 2019. During the internal crisis that followed Kasselakis officially exited SYRIZA on November 9, 2024. He was later critical in the formation of the new party Movement for Democracy. Former SYRIZA Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras later launched the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS). More about SYRIZA

  7. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) - Κομμουνιστικό Κόμμα Ελλάδας: A far-left political party dedicated to traditional Marxist-Leninist ideology. It formed originally in 1918 as the Socialist Labour Party of Greece but altered its name in November 1924. The party receives a certain level of support in Greece regardless of the ups-and-downs of the other political forces around it, and is reliable in its steady adherence to its long-rooted program of traditional 20th century communism. The current leader is Dimitris Koutsoumpas.

  8. Spartans (Σπαρτιάτες) - A far-right party founded in 2017. Leader is Vassilis Stigas.
  9. Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) - Χρυσή Αυγή: A far-right political party that has been banned from the polls, but still gains support from Greeks reacting to its nationalist and anti-immigrant positions. It is also defined as a party of "ultranationalism." A number of its past members and leadership are in jail.

  10. To Potami (The River) - Το Ποτάμι: A centrist political party from 2014.

  11. Greek Solution (Elliniki Lysi) - Ελληνική Λύση: A right-wing political party founded in 2016. Current leader is Kyriakos Velopoulos.

  12. NIKI (Victory – ΝΙΚΗ): Far-right, ultraconservative, Orthodox Christian influence party founded 2019. Current leader is Dimitris Natsios. The party won 10 seats in the June 2023 national election. Since 2024 it has one seat in the 2024 European Parliament. The representative is Nikos Anadiotis.

  13. MeRA25 - DiEM25's electoral wing: An anti-austerity party that is aligned usually with the DiEM25 movement. It is led by former SYRIZA celebrity Yanis Varoufakis. This party won 9 seats in the 2019 elections, but did not reach Greece's required of 3% threshold in the May and June 2023 elections and thus lost all parliamentary representation.

  14. Ecologist Greens (Oikologoi Prasinoi): A political party that is reflective of other European "green" parties. They have never won representation in Parliament, never hitting the 3% electoral threshold required in a national election.

  15. Course of Freedom (Πλεύση Ελευθερίας – Plefsi Eleftherias):Leftist populist, anti-austerity, pro-sovereignty party led by Zoe Konstantopoulou and founded in 2016.
